KS3 Design and Technology – The Course
At Simon Balle school Graphics is one of the four areas each year 7, 8 and 9 student participates in during the academic year in Design and Technology.
The type of projects a Simon Balle student can expect to do at KS3 are:
Year 7 – Photo Frames (Exploring Plastic)
Year 8 – Tea Light Holder (Exploring Metal)
Year 9 – DVD holder (Exploring Wood)
Resistant Materials – Year 7
Two exercises are normally undertaken during year 7 Resistant materials. The students focus during year 7 is work in plastics. Students are expected to design, analyse, make, test and evaluate their own product. Comparisons are made with everyday products. There is an emphasis on good graphics using a variety of media. 3D drawing techniques form the basis of communicating ideas in both finishes and sketches. A basic knowledge of materials, safety, tools and design is taught and the development of a technical vocabulary is encouraged.
